What We Do
The focus of our work is on supporting our partners in Uganda, Kenya and Ghana to meet the basic needs of local communities. These inter-related needs have been identified by the communities themselves:
- Water and sanitation programmes
- Health programmes (including addressing HIV and AIDS)
- Primary education and vocational training programmes
- Agriculture and food security programmes
Our partners work closely with the men, women and children in the poorest rural and peri urban areas to respond to the range of challenges facing them. Together, communities are able to develop integrated projects that address these critical issues in a participatory, sustainable and co-ordinated way. Many of the projects have water as their starting point.
Aidlink’s other key programmatic focus is fostering Development Education in Ireland by promoting an understanding of the causes of poverty and inequality in the world.
Water
The aim of the water and sanitation programme is to improve access to water and strengthen the livelihoods and health of men, women and children in rural households in Wakiso, Masaka, Kibale and Mubende districts of Uganda and the communities of Turkana district in Northern Kenya. The programme is being implemented by Aidlink partners Voluntary Action for Development (VAD), Caritas MADDO and EMESCO in Uganda, and the Diocese of Lodwar in Turkana, Northern Kenya. (More)
Health
The overall aim of the primary health care programme is to improve the health of local people in Kisumu and Turkana in Kenya through increased access to quality health care facilities. The programme is being implemented by the Diocese of Lodwar in Turkana in the North of Kenya and by the Kisumu Urban Apostolate Programme (KUAP) in Kisumu district in Western Kenya. (More)
Food Security
The food security and agriculture programme aims to support local partners to develop integrated programmes to tackle hunger through increased agricultural production; irrigation and rain water harvesting; farmers groups (particularly marginalised farmers) and support to community based extension workers. The promotion of gender equality is central to the agricultural interventions. (More)
Education
The objective of the education programme is to improve access to primary education and vocational skills. The programme is being implemented by the Girl Child Network in Kenya and Caritas MADDO in Uganda. While the Girl Child Network is highly regarded for its impressive lobbying and advocacy work, it has also been very successful as an implementer of the Kajiado Schools Water and Sanitation project. This project aims to increase access to primary education for girls and is distributing sanitary towels to over 2,700 Maasai girls across 37 schools in Kajiado District. Our partner in Ghana is the Spiritans Ghana Province. Aidlink meets the needs of the Ghana education programme through its own funding sources, with the support of the development education immersion programme. (More)
Development Education and Immersion Programme
Aidlink is committed to development education. We believe in informing people, especially the young, of the causes of poverty and inequality in the world. We achieve this through a schools linking and immersion programme and through our involvement in the dedicated development education website www.developmenteducation.ie. (More)
