Turkana County, Kenya, is one of the poorest and most isolated places in the world. Home to over 1 million people, 95% of the population survive on less than $2 a day. Following three years of little to no rainfall, the people of Turkana are today faced with one of the most severe droughts in living memory. Men, women and children walk up to 30 km every day in search of water. The goats and camels that families rely on for food and income are dying, and the production of maize, a local staple, is down by 50% leading to widespread hunger and malnutrition. Almost half a million people are in need of humanitarian food assistance.

The severity of the 2017 East Africa crisis is so great that it has been described by Stephen O’Brien, the UN under secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, as “the largest humanitarian crisis since the creation of the United Nations”.

For over fifteen years, Aidlink has delivered life-saving projects in Turkana County, Kenya. As the drought worsens and communities are faced with extreme challenges the support of the Irish public is needed more than ever to enable Aidlink  to reach families in need.
